The question of VMC or HMC often appears when a company expands from one or two VMC machines to a more specialized production line.
VMC — Vertical machining center
Advantages: lower investment cost, usually 40–60% less than an HMC of the same size; simple operation; smaller footprint; suitable for flat parts, molds and single-part machining.
Limitations: chips fall onto the machined surface, only one or two faces can be machined per setup, and productivity is lower for mass production.
HMC — Horizontal machining center
Advantages: gravity chip evacuation, two-position rotary tables and four-face machining in one setup. Productivity can be 3–5 times higher for box-shaped parts.
Limitations: higher price, typically 2–3 times a VMC; larger footprint; and higher requirements for experienced technicians.
Choose VMC for diverse parts, mold work and limited initial budgets. Choose HMC for mass production of box or housing parts where labor and setup time must be reduced.
